An American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) communication
working group, co-chaired by UGA Atmospheric Sciences Director
Marshall Shepherd, has published a white paper and brief on effective
climate change communication strategies. These reports are part of the
academy’s new Commission on Accelerating Climate Action Initiative,
which is currently in the process of being rolled out.

According to the AAAS, “The Communication
Working Group of the Commission on
Accelerating Climate Action developed 12
principles for effective climate change
communication, ranging from communicating
consensus on climate change to framing climate
change as an in-group issue. Using examples
from across the media landscape, the two
publications of this working group highlight
needed changes to the ways that climate is
discussed broadly.” The goal of the publications
are to provide guidance on “combatting
misinformation and reaching across divides to
engage people in action.”
